Tiny Shoulders

Βαδίζοντας προς τα εξηκοστά της γενέθλια, η πασίγνωστη Barbie έχει υπάρξει fashion icon, pop culture φαινόμενο, αλλά και στόχος έντονης κριτικής. Ωστόσο, η ομάδα στην καρδιά της Mattel που έχει αναλάβει την επικίνδυνη αποστολή να ανανεώσει το image της, δεν είναι αυτή που φαντάζεστε. Με επικεφαλής μια queer σχεδιάστρια με φεμινιστικές καταβολές, η ομάδα πίσω από την Barbie αντιμετωπίζει το ένα εμπόδιο μετά το άλλο, καθώς τα πιστεύω τους έρχονται σε σύγκρουση με το ένοχο παρελθόν της κούκλας που πρέπει να αλλάξουν. Το «Μέση Δαχτυλίδι: H Μπάρμπι Αλλιώς» δεν είναι απλά ένα διασκεδαστικό ντοκιμαντέρ, αλλά κι ένα απρόσμενα ενημερωτικό ταξίδι στην ιστορία της πιο δημοφιλούς κούκλας στον κόσμο. Είναι τελικά όργανο καταπίεσης ή πρωτεργάτης της γυναικείας ανεξαρτησίας, και μάλιστα σε μια εποχή που οι γυναίκες με το ζόρι έβγαιναν από το σπίτι για να δουλέψουν;

Η ταινία προβάλλεται στο πλαίσιο του American Film Showcase, σε διοργάνωση Exile Room, με την υποστήριξη της Πρεσβείας των ΗΠΑ στην Αθήνα.

Tiny Shoulders: Rethinking Barbie — In her 59 years, Barbie has become a fashion icon, a lightning rod and a target for feminists. Tiny Shoulders: Rethinking Barbie, featuring newly discovered footage and unprecedented access to the inner workings of a toy giant during BarbieÕs biggest reinvention, surveys 60 years of women in popular culture through the lens of this 11.5 inch, Zelig-like plastic icon. Featuring interviews with Gloria Steinem, Roxane Gay, Peggy Orenstein, Mattel insiders and cultural historians, the documentary reveals, through both funny and crushing archival material, and fly-on-the-wall observations of BarbieÕs current architects, the progression and regression in the fight for gender equality. In her almost 60 years, the world famous Barbie has become a fashion icon, a pop culture reference and a target for activists. Yet, the team struggling to bring this plastic-fantastic toy up to date isn’t what you thought it would be. Led by a queer feminist designer who is determined to make a difference, there’s nothing more exciting about witnessing her struggles, as her innermost beliefs clash with the doll’s ultra feminine history. This funny, surprisingly informative documentary about the most popular doll ever created, reveals little-known facts about its humble origins that will make you rethink everything you ever knew about your daughter’s favorite plaything. Is she an instrument of the patriarchy or a plastic rebel who normalized female independence when women where barely allowed to hold down jobs?
